DML 643 Constructivism and Technology
Constructivism is a learning theory that originated with the work of Lev Vygotsky and Jean Piaget. The idea that children learn through social interaction and by building on prior knowledge is now widely accepted and at the heart of most educational reform movements. Exploring Constructivism is a "hands-on," introductory course on constructivist views of teaching and learning and how digital media can be used to support these strategies. The course will cover
(1) the history of cognitive and social constructivism,
(2) constructivism and the design of on-line distance learning,
(3) the evaluation of simulations and applets that are designed to support inquiry and discovery, and
(4) alternative assessment strategies that support and measure learning, especially in environments that use digital media.
